General information for new freshmen in Cinema & Photography

You should plan to enroll in and complete 15 credit hours (5 classes) each Fall and Spring semester. If you successfully complete 15 credit hours each semester and register early enough to enroll in the courses you need, you should have no trouble graduating in 4 years. If some semester you choose to take less than 15 credit hours you may take a summer class or two to make up the credit hours and still graduate in 4 years.

In Cinema & Photography advisement and registration begins very early each semester. When registering for the Fall and Spring semesters of your Freshman year you will be advised by and register for classes with Loen Graceson-Martin, the MCMA Freshman Academic Advisor. Loen can be reached at 618-453-4303 or in COMM room 1014B. You should meet with Loen to plan your Spring classes before mid-October in your first Fall semester.

To register for the Fall semester of your Sophomore year you will meet with the Cinema & Photography Academic Advisor, Carol Westerman-Jones. You should plan to come to the CP main office in Communications room 1101 the third or fourth week Spring semester to sign up for an advisement/registration appointment for the up coming Fall semester. If you to not register early you may not get into the classes you need. Cinema & Photography 300 and 400 level courses fill particularly quickly.

All Cinema & Photography students should plan to complete their English composition requirement, math, speech and MCMA 201 or 202 during their freshman year if at all possible. Even though the courses you are enrolled in your freshman year may not directly relate to your major they are very important. Please do your best in them. Your entry into cinema or photo major classes will be determined by your cumulative grade point average. If you have a low grade point average you may not be allowed to enter the 300 level required courses for your major on time and may not graduate in 4 years as a result.

Cinema Students should be aware that CP 355 Film Production I is a selective course. Students must have a minimum of 26 credit hours completed and a 2.75 cumulative g.p.a and have earned a grade of B or better in CP 101 and a C or better in MCMA 202 in order to be considered for enrollment into the course. A minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.75 is required to enter any cinema 300 level courses.

Photography Students should be aware that admission to CP 320, Photography I is selective entry course. CP 220 Intro to Photography with a grade of C or better is a prerequisite for CP 320. CP 220 should be completed the freshman year. Admission to CP 320 will also be based upon a student's cumulative grade point average.
