General information for prospective students in Cinema & Photography

If a student transfers to SIU in Cinema with junior standing or higher they should expect to graduate in 3 years, or 2 ½ years at best as our film classes are sequential and are very demanding. Photography transfer students who are juniors or beyond should expect to graduate, at best in 2 ½ years or 2 years including 2 summers. This is because photo courses are also sequential and very demanding. We recommend, if possible that students begin our program at least by their sophomore year in order to graduate in a timely manner.

In Cinema & Photography advisement and registration begins very early each semester. New transfer students should plan to call the CP Academic Advisor before March 1 for Fall semester or before October 1 for Spring semester advisement/registration appointments. If a student does not register early they may not get into the classes they need to graduate on time. Cinema & Photography courses fill extremely quickly.

All Cinema & Photography students should plan to complete their English composition requirements, math, speech and MCMA 201 or 202 during their freshman year. Even though the courses they are enrolled in freshman year may not directly relate to the CP major they are very important. Entry into cinema or photo classes will be determined by a student’s cumulative grade point average. Students with a low grade point average may not be allowed to enter the 300 level required courses for the major on time and may not graduate in 4 years as a result. All prospective CP transfer students should aim for earning an overall g.p.a. of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) or above.

Cinema Students should be aware that CP 355 Film Production I is a selective course. Students must have a minimum of 26 credit hours completed and a 2.75 cumulative g.p.a in order to be considered for enrollment into the course. They should also have completed CP 101 Film History and Analysis with a grade of B or better and MCMA 202 Visual Literacy with a grade of C or better in order to be considered for entry into this course. Of the students who have met these minimum requirements all of the students applying for the course will be ranked against each other based on cumulative g.p.a. including any transfer work. A minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.75 is required to enter any cinema 300 level courses. Cinema students should plan to complete CP 101 their freshman year with a grade of A or B and must complete MCMA 201 and 202 with a grade of C or better.

Photography Students should be aware that admission to CP 320, Photography I is selective entry course. CP 220 Intro to Photography with a grade of C or better is becoming a prerequisite for CP 320. CP 220 should be completed the freshman year. Admission to CP 320 will also be based upon a student's cumulative grade point average. Students applying to CP 320 will be ranked against each other based on cumulative g.p.a. including transfer work.
